Latent Fissures, a photography exhibition by Venezuelan photographer Jorge Andres Castillo, showcases 27 black-and-white photographs that capture the contrasting lives in East and West Berlin shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Hosted by the Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) and sponsored by the Miami Institute of Photography (MIP), this collection commemorates the 35th anniversary of the wall's fall on November 9, 2024.
Latent Fissures reflects the unique socialist aesthetic of East Berlin and the dynamic cultural landscape of West Berlin, chronicling everyday life as cracks in the Iron Curtain began to show. Castillo took these images in April 1989, during a visit supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), while studying Communication Design in West Germany.
Using a 35mm SLR and a 6x6 medium-format camera, Castillo created an intimate and evocative record of the people and spaces on both sides of the Berlin Wall. These photographs capture the palpable tension and conflict that marked the final chapter of the Cold War.
DORCAM and the Miami Institute of Photography invite you to a talk with the photographer titled "One Day on the Other Side." As part of the exhibition's opening, Castillo will share his experiences documenting the divided city before the fall of the Berlin Wall. During his talk, Castillo will also present exclusive, unreleased images he captured in December 1989, just days after the wall fell. The photos showcase the hopeful atmosphere and transitional spirit on both sides of Berlin.
Grietas Invisibles, exposición fotográfica del venezolano Jorge Andrés Castillo, presenta 27 imágenes en blanco y negro que capturan las vidas contrastantes en Berlín Oriental y Occidental poco antes de la caída del Muro de Berlín en 1989. La muestra, organizada por el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Doral (DORCAM) y patrocinada por el Instituto de Fotografía de Miami (MIP), conmemora el 35.º aniversario de la caída del muro este próximo 9 de noviembre de 2024 a partir de las 6 de la tarde.
Grietas Latentes refleja la particular estética socialista de Berlín Oriental y el dinámico panorama cultural de Berlín Occidental, documentando la vida cotidiana en momentos en que comenzaban a aparecer fisuras en el Telón de Acero. Castillo tomó estas imágenes en abril de 1989, durante una visita apoyada por el Servicio Alemán de Intercambio Académico (DAAD), mientras estudiaba Diseño de Comunicación en Alemania Occidental.
Usando una cámara SLR de 35 mm y una cámara de formato medio de 6x6, Castillo creó un registro íntimo y evocador de las personas y espacios a ambos lados del muro. Estas fotografías capturan la palpable tensión y el conflicto que marcaron el último capítulo de la Guerra Fría.
DORCAM y el Miami Institute of Photography le invitan a una charla con el fotógrafo titulada "Un día en el otro lado". Como parte de la inauguración de la exposición, Castillo compartirá sus experiencias documentando la ciudad dividida antes de la caída del Muro de Berlín. Durante su charla, Castillo también presentará imágenes exclusivas e inéditas que capturó en diciembre de 1989, pocos días después de la caída del muro. Las fotografías muestran la atmósfera esperanzadora y el espíritu de transición en ambos lados de Berlín.
